POLICE officers were called to an Old Hall pub after concerned customers witnessed a 'male hitting a dog with a metal lead' last night, Friday.

Customers at The Maltings, on Bewsey Farm Close, intervened and took care of the male dog until officers arrived.

The animal was taken into police care until he was collected by the RSPCA, which will be investigating the matter.

Police thanked staff and customers at the pub for their efforts.

A spokesman said: "Concerned customers at The Maltings pub intervened when they witnessed a male hitting a dog with a metal lead.

"We would like to thank the staff and customers at The Maltings who took care of the dog, made a fuss of him before our arrival and while officers were at the location."
