AN ORFORD architect has revealed ambitions to build a giant interactive installation at a festival in the Nevada desert.

Joshua Potter is part of the Pursuit project that would see the Norris Street native construct a huge sculpture that 70,000 festival-goers would be able to climb and sit on.

Former St Gregory’s Catholic High School student Joshua is looking to raise £17,750 through crowdfunding in order to exhibit the work at the Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.

The 27-year-old said: “Burning Man has been going since about 1986 and started in San Francisco as a counter-culture festival for art and communal gathering before moving out to the desert in Nevada.

“It grew in a huge city where people build art.

“I went last year with university and built a group project and I want to build on that this year.

“It’s hard to put into words what it’s like – it’s a life-adjusting and you think about things differently afterwards.

“There’s a big difference in how people approach other people and a stark difference between the real world and this fantasy world.

“I’m looking to crowdfund from start to finish, including the building materials, transportation and clean-up.”

Following the conclusion of the festival, which runs from August 28 to September 5, the installation will be given a ritualistic burning.

Joshua, who is three weeks away from completing an architecture degree at the University of Westminster, added: “The idea is to build and interactive sculpture that you can climb on.

“The first space will be one where you can sit and look out across the area while shaded from the hot sun to create a connection between the area and the desert.

“The second space lets you climb up toward the viewing platforms at the top – it’s quite hard to reach the spaces and it is based on the idea of working together to reach the top and encouraging a communal attitude to reach a goal.”

The deadline for Joshua’s crowdfunding is Monday May 16 at 9pm – for more information click here.
