A PETITION calling for a 'danger to society' to be jailed for longer after he killed his best friend's dog has surpassed 35,000 signatures – after it was launched from thousands of miles across the globe.

Lewis Modlinsky, 18, of Redshank Lane in Birchwood, was ordered to spend 18 weeks behind bars on April 14 after 'torturing' and inflicting a series of injuries on 'loving' two-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier Jager.

Owner Sammii Peers spoke of her devastation following the horrific ordeal in her Birchwood flat, which took place as she was giving birth to daughter Beau in hospital, though she has taken little comfort from the sentence imposed on Modlinsky.

However, she is not alone.

After coming across the case Mitzi Verzola, who lives in Canada and has two dogs, reached out to Sammii to send her condolences.

After finding out a campaign had not been set up to urge the court to increase Modlinsky's sentence she launched the petition 'more jail time for heartless thug'.

It has gained more than 35,450 signatures but Mitzi is targeting 50,000 before delivering it to Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court, where Modlinsky was jailed.

The 30-year-old said: "I was sure that if I felt sickness in my stomach after reading the story, others would, and I was correct – 35,000 plus other people feel the same exact way.

"I felt sorry for Sammii. Not only did she have to deal with the birth of her daughter but Lewis could've changed her after what he did to Jager.

"What if Sammii went into a severe post-partum depression after that. If that did happen, Lewis would then be responsible for the death of Jager, but he would've stripped away Sammii's ability to be a great mother to her daughter, along with her innocent daughter suffering.

"I would've thought the courts would have more compassion for her.

"His sentence should be longer, he is a real danger to society. The justice system failed her – it failed her completely.

"I've been sending the courts updates on how many signatures I've obtained through this petition but only once have they responded asking me who I am and what it is I'm trying to do.

"I further explained myself and haven't received anything yet. I don't think the courts care about her honestly.

"They should care about her safety – Lewis can be a free man in a few weeks and do the same to her and her innocent child.

"Even if they feel like a longer sentence wouldn't help Lewis, he still needs to be reprimanded somewhere.

"I have two dogs and I'm also a mother to a beautiful girl, which is why I decided to start this petition.

"I put myself in Sammii's shoes – she's a strong woman. I don't think I would be emotionally ready to handle a birth and death of anything I loved in one day."
