CALLANDS Primary School has been awarded top marks after an education watchdog graded the school as outstanding.

Following a visit by inspectors on March 8 and 9, school leaders were praised for having passion and determination to raise the quality of teaching which has resulted in rapid improvements.

While it was also noted that 'the dedicated and inspirational leadership of the head teacher has been key to the significant improvements made since the last inspection’.

All categories assessed by inspectors were awarded the highest rating available.

The school on Callands Road, which was previously rated as requires improvement, has made positive changes since head teacher Lisa Wigglesworth stepped up to the role in January 2012.

It was not just the school leaders who were commended following the inspection by Ofsted.

Pupils’ personal development was described as ‘a particular strength of the school’ while the teaching was described as high quality.

Elaine White, lead inspector, said: "Pupils report that theirs is a happy school where everyone cares.

"The school has successfully embedded an ethos where pupils are encouraged to be kind, considerate, caring and respectful.

“For example, pupils carry an invisible bucket which holds their good thoughts and feelings.

"Pupils understand that they can fill their bucket, and that of others, when they are kind, considerate or respectful, and similarly can empty their bucket when they do the opposite."

She added: "Pupils are proud of their school and say ‘we are proud because we are a caring community'.

"They relish their roles as school councillors, monitors and 'first aiders' and take their responsibilities seriously."

Governors were also noted to have 'a very accurate understanding of the quality of education provided by the school'.

Steve Reddy, executive director for families and wellbeing at Warrington Borough Council: "We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the exemplary work of this outstanding school.

"This is an excellent report which is testament to the expertise and dedication of staff."
