WARRINGTON’s electronic displays at bus stops will be overhauled after they were labelled ‘not fit for purpose’.

The 50 most-used bus stops in the town are set to get new fixed displays after parish councillor Andrew Hill labelled them ‘totally inadequate’.

He pointed to the stop at the site of Woolston High School, which permanently says there are no buses for an hour and that the date is September 30 2012.

He said: “The real-time signs in many bus stop are totally inadequate and not fit for purpose – these displays are owned and maintained by Warrington Borough Council and I believe they have a responsibility to ensure that access to public transport is as easy as possible.

“The current state of the displays means that that is just not the case – many are showing completely incorrect timetable information.”

Work on the new system is currently ongoing, with ‘robust testing’ taking place ahead of its unveiling in late spring.

David Boyer, assistant director of transport and environment at Warrington Borough Council, said: “The old system was expensive to maintain and very unreliable – the new system uses new technologies and is far more reliable and it is also less costly to maintain.

“It will consist of 50 fixed displays located at the most used bus stops and will show actual departure times and countdowns to bus arrivals of the majority of bus services.

“It will be a far better information system for bus users in Warrington.”
