A LATCHFORD couple who wanted a relaxed, Easter wedding have chosen an unusual alternative to the traditional wedding cake.

Lauren Pacey, 31, and Ben Lester, 29, will tie the knot at Park Manor in Victoria Park on March 24 and have chosen to have a giant 5.4kg Easter egg instead of a cake.

The 70cm tall Imperial Easter Egg was spotted by Lauren on social media and has been specially made for the couple by Bettys Craft Bakery in Harrogate.

“We are not really that traditional when it comes to weddings because we weren’t going to have a cake at all originally,” said Ben.

“We are getting married the day before Good Friday so I said to Lauren, ‘What about an Easter egg?’ and she remembered the Bettys' one she had seen.

“How we cut it is still up for discussion at the minute – I think it’s going to get cracked at some point, not like a cutting of the cake.

“We have two young nephews who are two and three years old and we might ask them to crack it.”

Ben, an electrical supervisor, and Lauren, an administrator, met at a friend’s 21st birthday party and Ben proposed when the couple were having a meal at a beautiful roof top restaurant in Kalkan, Turkey.

When they approached Bettys about the Easter egg they were invited to look around the Chocolate Room where the eggs are handcrafted.

“We hadn’t been to Bettys before but they invited us down for an afternoon tea with them and to see the Easter eggs,” said Ben.

He said the wedding is going to be a relaxed event and the £250 Easter egg is a good break from tradition.
