HOUGHTON Hall care home, in Orford, is to close.

Charitable care home group CLS Care Services said it had reluctantly taken the decision after it could no longer afford to run the 40-bed home, in Greenwood Crescent, which has 25 residents.

Nick Dykes, CLS chief executive, said it was a sad day for everyone but the closure reflected the realities of caring for older people in the 21st century.

He said: "Because of Government policy, local authority support for care homes has reduced substantially.

"The majority of our residents are placed by Warrington Borough Council and they tell us that, due to the success of community initiatives, the number of people requiring residential care is reducing."

The charity is now consulting with residents and their families to find suitable places in other residential homes nearby and staff will be offered jobs in other CLS care homes.

Pam Smith, head of service for the council, said: "We are sorry Houghton Hall is to close.

"We will be working closely with CLS Care Services, the residents and their relatives, to ensure that the people who live there are found new homes with as little disruption as possible."
