MORE than £3,400 was raised for a Cheshire charity at the annual sportsman's dinner at the Masonic Hall in Warrington.
Principal speaker was European Cup winner John McGovern, who regaled dinner guests with stories from his outstanding football career under Brian Clough and Peter Taylor.
At the age of 19, McGovern became the youngest footballer to play in all four divisions of the league and during his career he won promotion with Hartlepool United, Derby County and Nottingham Forest.
Compere for the evening was comedian Gary Marshall, who thoroughly entertained the crowd and received a rousing applause following his act.
The social event was held to raise money for Warrington-based charity CANtreat, which helps to improve facilities in Cheshire hospitals for cancer sufferers
