THE first episode of After Hours has just hit the screens.

Sky's comedy, directed by The Royle Family's Craig Cash, reimagines Lymm as a fading northern town called Shankly.

But the village was clearly recognisable with the Bridgewater Canal and The Bull's Head providing the main backdrops for the scenes.

The show focuses on 18-year-old Willow Hannigan (James Tarpey) who lives alongside the Lower Dam and is a massive fan of the internet radio station, After Hours.

The indie rock station just happens to be broadcast from a narrowboat around the corner and when Willow is dumped by his girlfriend, an opportunity arises to work with his heroes, Lauren (Jaime Winstone) and Ollie (Rob Kendrick).

With episodes just lasting 20 minutes, After Hours is an accessible, lighthearted and feel good comedy about the radio station helping to right wrongs and bring a bit of community spirit back.

So in the first episode, Lauren and Ollie encourage listeners to start having their milk delivered after Willow's dad Peter (Father Ted's Ardal O’Hanlon on fine form as usual) loses his milk round.

Expect a barrage of milk-related gags which are funny to begin with but then lose their shine.

The show's simple, gentle tales will not be for everyone but if you live in Lymm or have connections to the village it is great to see all the recognisable scenes on a major Sky show.

It is funny seeing the traditional pub, The Bull's Head, transformed into a trendy spot for 18-year-olds (and this is where Willow is interviewed for his job on the radio).

The After Hours narrowboat is also moored overlooking Saddlers Arms and the Lymm Brewery Tap.

But it is when Willow is handing out his CV around 'Shankly' that you get a whistle-stop tour of familiar sites.

Willow chats to Karl Welsh Floral Design, Italian restaurant Baci (before it was replaced by Rolando's) and Lymm Electric (as Shankly Electric).

Craig Cash also seems to have a bizarre penchant for aerial shots of Lymm with the village seen from above again and again.

You will have to see for yourself on Monday whether you think After Hours will be a hit for Sky.

But it is great to see Lymm back on the telly after Candy Cabs with Jo Joyner and Claire Sweeney.

- After Hours returns next Monday at 9.30pm on Sky1.
