A CHEERLEADING group in Woolston is jumping for joy after securing a top prize in a property firm's competition.

Knights American Cheer (KAC), which performs cheerleading and dance routines throughout the year at charity and community events, fended off competition across the region to scoop £500 from Miller Homes' Summer of Sport contest.

Miller, based in Westbrook, invited entrants to inform it why they are worthy of winning the cash, in no more than 200 words.

In the regional round of the initiative judges were looking for examples of how sporting clubs in each community would make the most out of the donation, how the cash boost would directly support the learning and fitness of its members and specific examples of how the money would be used.

KAC, based at Grosvenor Grange, said it was looking to raise money for new equipment and a gym refurbishment to include a new sprung floor, which would help improve how coaches and athletes are able to train.

The judging panel, which included Preston North End FC's Chris Humphrey, agreed KAC deserved to be worthy winners.

Humphrey said: "It was great to see such strong entries from across the north west and to know that the money is going to be put to such good use.

"Supporting grassroots and community based sport is critical for success in later life and it's great to see Miller supporting the community in this way."

Angeline Rees, from KAC, added: "As each season progresses so do the skills and abilities of the athletes and that's why it is so critical that we have the right equipment to help them reach their full potential.

"We have a dedicated team of volunteers that put so much into supporting the athletes and we're delighted that Miller has been able to support the community and help turn our dreams into a reality."

The award-winning UK house builder initiated the campaign this summer for the fourth year.
