A CEREMONY was held yesterday afternoon to mark the 75th anniversary of the Thames Board Mills bombing.

The Mayor of Warrington Cllr Geoff Settle laid a wreath at the memorial at Centre Park to remember the 16 men, women and children who died when two bombs were dropped on Arpley Meadows at 5.03pm on September 14 1940 during a summer gala.

Stephen Kingsnorth read out the names of the dead.

A further 150 people were buried in the wreckage, and in addition to the dead 15 were seriously injured and 28 were slightly injured.

A lone bomber navigating along the Manchester Ship Canal heading back to Germany dropped two bombs onto the site during World War Two.

It was the worst war time bombing that Warrington suffered.

The landscape and lake around the memorial were formed as a result of the crater caused by the bomb.
