A PLAQUE will be unveiled in Fletcher Street on Sunday to commemorate Warrington Wolves’ first ever game of rugby league as a new programme to celebrate the heritage of the town and club is launched tonight.

The first game following the formation of the Northern Union was a 5-4 win over Hunslet in 1895, which took place where Fletcher Street now stands – the club would move a few yards to Wilderspool Stadium three years later when the houses on the street were built.

The plaque will be put on the former home of the late legendary kit man and groundsman Ockher as part of the RFL’s 120th year celebrations and the new Pass It Back scheme which will launch at the Pyramid Centre tonight, Thursday.

A masters game against Leeds, with past players wearing specially commissioned vintage shirts, will then take place at the Halliwell Jones Stadium prior to the Super League game against Hull FC.

Pass It Back will see the creation of a new website featuring an interactive version of the heritage timeline under the South Stand at the Halliwell Jones Stadium which will allow supporters to add their own memories.

Past players will lead of tour of the timeline on September 12, followed by a heritage walk to the Pyramid Centre and a programme fair.

It will also develop a free teaching resource for schools celebrating the history of the town and club.

They will be looking to recruit 25 new volunteers to help deliver project over the next year.
