CAMPAIGNERS bidding to bring a theatre to the town have revealed they have a 'plan of action' following their latest meeting.

A sub-committee of Warrington and District Arts Council (WADAC) met last Tuesday to discuss plans to bring such a facility to the town despite a lack of support from key bodies.

The council and cinema operator of the future 10-screen IMAX, which the Warrington Guardian understands will be Cineworld, have not backed the move to help deliver a theatre as part of the £107 million Bridge Street development.

But long-standing WADAC member Cllr Celia Jordan is as determined as ever to fulfil her ambition to see a new venue in the town.

"The meeting was very helpful and we had input from Seb Farrell, who started the original campaign to get a theatre here, so that was really good," she said.

"We have a plan of action and are looking at other town centre venues as we need to look at other alternatives.

"I don't think it will be any good if we do not get any potential theatre in the town centre as it needs to be accessible so would be an ideal location."

Cllr Jordan said WADAC is set to get legal advice on whether it can re-emerge as part of the original campaign group to access funds of around £3,000, which are sitting in an account untouched.

If the arts council can get hold off the funds the mission to deliver a theatre will receive a boost, in a move which is being tipped to dramatically improve opportunities for youngsters.

"I think all young people that are interested in performing arts here are very deprived in terms of being able to stretch their wings," added Cllr Jordan.

"Most towns have one where people can go on stage and get encouragement, whether it is a career or hobby to them.

"We have some fantastic talent and it would be a shame for youngsters not to be given the platform to show that talent."

However, arts council secretary Mike Murphy said there is 'no intention' to get legal advice because the present committee has not ‘misappropriated or embezzled’ the funds.

"The arts council wishes to follow a policy on all issues to co-operate with the council rather than be engaged in confrontation," he added.

"The views expressed are those of the sub-committee, which has not yet reported to the council."

The arts council will meet on September 2.
