EMOTIONS ran high when 26-year-old David James was surprised as the winner of the Warrington Guardian’s teacher of the month on his final day at Beamont Community Primary School.

There were tears of joy as the primary school teacher collected his award in front of staff and pupils at the school on O'Leary Street.

The teacher was so stunned by the revelation, his jaw dropped as he was announced as the winner.

He said: “I can’t believe a child in my class would say something so special about me.

“I will always do whatever I can to support the children in my class and I’m there to help them no matter what.

"To receive something this special is above and beyond what I would ever expect.

“I don’t need this kind of thank you but it so special and is something I will treasure.”

His energy and enthusiasm was described as infectious and he was hailed as a ‘kind, caring and wonderful teacher’.

Every morning he stands at the door and welcomes every child that passes him.

Even if they are not in his class he knows them by name.

He added: “I went into teaching because I knew I would be able to make a difference.

“Knowing that you have helped them is just so rewarding. This award is the icing on top of the cake.”

While Mr James has only been in teaching for five years during that time it is evident that he has made a difference from the deafening applause he received from those at the school.

But it was a bitter sweet moment for Mr James as he prepares to start his next journey at Wilmslow Grange Community Primary.

Mr James, who lives in Manchester, said: I’m moving back to a school nearer to home. That’s the only reason I’m leaving because I love it here – both the staff and children are just amazing and work so hard.”

Each month, the Warrington Guardian celebrates the hard work, dedication and achievements of one deserving teacher in the town.

The award, which is sponsored by education recruitment and training consultancy Academics Ltd, honours a teacher who has made a real difference to the school community.

The competition will reopen for entries on September 1.
