THE former Carlton nightclub in Warrington is set to be transformed into plush residential homes.

Planning permission has been granted to develop the site and the neighbouring former Miss Selfridge shop on Sankey Street.

It will see a new shop opened as well as six homes - made up of four properties with two bedrooms and two with one bedroom.

The shop will be reduced in size according to developers as the current site, which has remained empty since Miss Selfridge closed, is 'too large' and therefore expensive to compete with others in the area.

In a document sent to the council, developers said: "This proposed scheme will provide suitable housing within a highly desirable inner city area for families or couples wishing to live in a convenient location close to the centre of Warrington.

"Expanding upon the existing choice for residential properties available within the area the scheme looks to offer housing that meets their personal needs and aspirations close to local employment opportunities, amenities and transport links."

There will be no parking spaces at the site.

The Carlton Club closed in the late 1990s.

In its heyday its soul and disco nights played host to musical legends including Edwin Starr, Wilson Pickett, Eric Clapton and Jackie Wilson.

Rick Astley sang 'Never Gonna Give You Up' live for the first time at the Carlton while footballer John Barnes was among the guests.
