VOLUNTEERS are wanted for a speedwatch operation in Great Sankey.

Police are appealing for residents to take part in the programme, which will see people trained and equipped to use speed guns.

The car details are passed on to the police who then send out a warning and advice letter to the motorist.

Sgt Michelle White told the recent Community Action Meeting at Tim Parry Community Centre that they were asking people to give up an hour or so to be a volunteer.

"We have found it has been extremely successful in other areas," said Sgt White.

"The traffic sergeant sends a letter to the motorist saying a member of the community has seen you speeding.

"It just makes people think. They often feel quite bad once they have been caught.

"It's community led and that's why we are trying to get more people involved."

She added: "I think it would be quite good fun for you. It's great. You can't imagine how many times you catch people speeding.

"You see their bonnets go down as they brake and they look and think that wasn't a police officer, who was it?

"I can encourage it, and you will really enjoy it."

Police got six names from volunteers at the end of the meeting.

Anyone wishing to take part can contact the station on 0845 458 6385.
