"THE core centre of the school is already great, we just need to build on that to create something really special."

Those are the words of new Lymm High School head teacher Gwyn Williams who after a turbulent period is looking to bring a lot more stability to the Oughtrington Lane school.

The 37-year-old has moved his family, including two young boys, to the north west from Oxford to take on his first headship.

He added: "There's been a bit of turmoil over the last few years for the school but it's clearly in a position to go places and become a brilliant school again.

"This is a long-term move for me and my family and I'm intending on being here for a number of years.

"Teachers have a huge responsibility caring for other peoples' children and I reminded the staff of that on my first day when my six-year-old son was starting at his new school."

Mr Williams started at the school five weeks ago and has been spending the term 'looking and listening' ahead of changes he hopes to make in September.

But the former history teacher says he is not planning on bringing in anything drastic and will instead be focussing on performance and extra-curricular activities underpinned by 'impeccable behaviour'.

He added: "This is not a great time to bring in changes.

"I've been very explicit about that with the parents and I'll be announcing the priorities and what needs to change from September.

"There won't be a huge overhaul as the school doesn't need turning upside down but building instead on what has already been done.

"I'm not into gimmicks and it won't be immediately obvious from the outside but it's more about working with staff and helping them see how students are capable of more academically."

Mr Williams, who is originally from north east Wales, added he hopes under his leadership the community will describe the school as great once again and it will be talked about for the 'right reasons'.
