MAYOR of London Boris Johnson posed for selfies as he walked the streets of Stockton Heath to show support for Warrington South's Conservative candidate today, Wednesday.

Mr Johnson, who is standing as candidate for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, joined David Mowat in the village to greet thrilled residents and businesses.

As he made his way on foot from Mr Mowat's office, on Stafford Road, to Stockton Heath, he was stopped on numerous occasions before enjoying a coffee at Esquires.

While crossing the road at the traffic lights opposite the Forge he also spoke to a resident's dad over the phone after being asked to have a 'quick chat'.

But he was keen to address the importance of the electorate re-electing Mr Mowat as MP next Thursday.

"I am here to campaign for David, who has done an outstanding job as the MP - we urgently need him to return with a good majority," he said.

"He has done a great job for the area and has campaigned for more bridges and helped with getting young people into work.

"It is great to see the economy recovering. We need an absolute majority in Parliament and David is a crucial part of that - if we don't win here there is a real risk the whole thing will slide backwards.

"Labour can only win if they are propped up by the Scottish National Party (SNP)."

He also raised his 'anxiety' over the possible implications of electing Labour leader Ed Miliband into power.

"The risk is that you have a Government that is already considerably to the left of previous Labour Governments - they have got some very bad ideas for the country," he said.

"I think they would run down our defences and I think they have been blackmailed by the SNP to give up Trident.

"The real anxiety is SNP want to borrow £148 billion pounds more - they have a very clear agenda and want to take money away from the English economy.

"Ed Miliband won't be able to get any bill through Parliament without their say so - I think things like bridges could seriously be at risk."

During his visit, the Mayor indulged in treats offered by shops and praised the 'strength of people' in Stockton Heath.

"I am really encouraged by the atmosphere - every shop I went past was occupied and businesses were active," he added.

"Even now, we have had a good recovery in London but some businesses down the high street are shutting up but that is not the case here.

"It is really thriving and I congratulate everybody on their enterprise - these are fantastic businesses.

"I think generally people seem to be confident about the economy. David is getting really good support for the stuff he has been doing so fingers crossed."

But Mr Johnson, who got the train to Warrington after leaving his bike chained at London Euston station, remained coy when asked on plans to take over as Conservative leader after David Cameron steps down.

He said: "You can expect to see me support David Mowat thumpingly to be re-elected here year after year and I have to be elected in Uxbridge and South Ruislip so that is my priority."
