TUESDAY marked the end of an influential 40 years in social housing for the chief executive of Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT).

Peter Mercer started his career in the industry when he joined Liverpool City Council in 1974 before a move to Warrington Borough Council (WBC) in 1989.

It was there where he obtained Government funding to bring the housing stock up to sufficient levels and led the transfer of housing stock from WBC to GGHT in 2010 - a move endorsed by the vast majority of tenants.

Figures from across the town, including party leaders, the Mayor, Cllr Ted Finnegan, and Warrington Ethnic Communities Association (WECA) official, Hasan Kazi, gathered to commend Mr Mercer at last week's stakeholder event.

"During my time here I can wholeheartedly say that I have enjoyed it and think that I leave it in good hands," said Mr Mercer, aged 57.

"I’m sad to be leaving Warrington, partners and people I’ve worked with for over 26 years, but I’m pleased to know that the future of the organisation is strong and secure.

"I would like to thank the many partners, stakeholders and staff who have supported me during my career."

GGHT chairman, Roy Smith, added: "It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Peter over the years - Peter has had so much time, enthusiasm and energy for the borough of Warrington."

Mr Kazi praised Mr Mercer for helping to develop community relations in the town but admitted the recognised figure may find it difficult to keep his feet up.

"I represent the ethnic communities of Warrington and with these communities the connection with Peter is unique," he said.

"We appreciate his support and encouragement. It will be very difficult for Peter to sit quietly - he is a workaholic and we will never see him resting."

Mr Mercer was presented with a globe on behalf of WECA at the stakeholder event.

He has forged strong relationships with partners, as well as stakeholders, in the town and has been instrumental in securing GGHT’s future with Helena Partnerships which has seen the two organisations become part of the newly-formed Torus.

Rob Young will be taking over from Mr Mercer.
