Fighting extremism

A GREAT Sankey charity has been leading an event considering the effects of radicalisation that can lead young people to violent extremism.

The Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace organised the event in Manchester bringing together 90 leading education specialists from across Europe in response to the growing number of young people who are falling prey to extremism and the mounting pressure on schools, colleges and universities to respond.

The Foundation will be prompting the delegation to endorse a manifesto to influence policy and decision makers which will be presented to a meeting of European Ministers in Paris.

Kelly Simcock, Director of Commissions at the Foundation for Peace and the UK host said: “The departure of three young women from East London to a new life in the so called 'Islamic State' last month was a stark reminder of the way that this conflict continues to twist in ways that we could never have imagined.

"The thoughts that lead to violent extremism start early on the playground and in classrooms and through social networks."

GP plans

PLANS have been approved to revert a medical surgery back to a house in Great Sankey.

Work on the former home of Hood Manor surgery, on Winstanley Close, now has to take place within three years.

The building has been left empty since GPs moved to what used to be the Sankey Arms to open the Great Sankey Health Centre in January.

Plans for the property include turning the waiting room into a conservatory, a kitchen where the surgery's reception used to be and three bedrooms which were formerly a nurse's office and examination rooms.

Hitchhike for charity

A PENKETH teen will be making the most of his Easter break after vowing to hitchhike across Europe in aid of charity.

Kyle McCracken, of Tannery Lane, plans to get from Sheffield, where he is studying at university, to Bucharest in Romania in nine days to raise cash for Burton Street which supports children and adults with learning disabilities, Haven House which supports victims of all kinds of abuse and the Sheffield Children's Hospital.

To take part in the event organised by 'Bummit', Kyle has to collect a minimum of £250 with all the cash raised going towards the charities.
