PLANS for a new Lidl and KFC close to the Pink Eye roundabout in Warrington look set to be thrown out.

The supermarket and drive through giants have jointly submitted plans to develop the vacant land, currently home to various trees and shrubs, off Thewlis Street and Old Liverpool Road.

But with the application to be discussed by councillors on Thursday night, it looks unlikely to be passed as planners have recommended that the scheme be refused.

A report to be sent to councillors says the Lidl would be open from 8am to 8pm in the week while the KFC would open from 7am to 11.30pm.

The proposals would have 116 car parking spaces and create around 70 full and part time jobs.

But planners say the scheme should be blocked.

They say the access, off Thewlis Street, would cause extra congestion in the area and increase the risk of collisions as cars exit and enter the site.

It also says the new businesses would have a negative effect on others around.

The report states: "The proposal development would impact on planned investment in the town centre, would have a significantly adverse impact on trade and turnover both in the town centre and on the overall vitality and viability of Lovely Lane Neighbourhood Centre.

"The proposed Lidl will compete directly with the anchor Co-op store at the Neighbourhood Centre for top-up shopping trade."

The meeting takes place in the Town Hall at 6.30pm.
