WARRINGTON Borough Council (WBC) has launched a stinging attack on the Prime Minister for taking credit of the town's growth on his recent visit to the town.

David Cameron praised the council for developments made since his tenure began but claimed more needs to be done to help sustain progress.

However, leader of WBC, Terry O'Neill, insists the growth is down to the Labour-run council, rather than Mr Cameron's actions in government.

"It is all very well Mr Cameron comes to Warrington and notices that the town is bucking the national trend and is growing," he said.

"But this is more to do with the Labour taking over the council 4 years ago and drawing up new regeneration plans to kick start our local economy rather anything the Tory-Lib Dem coalition government has done.

"If anything, the Tory-Lib Dem coalition government is short-changing the north west and Warrington in particular.

"In their latest round of infrastructure funding the government is giving the north west the lowest amount compared to the rest of the country.

"The north west is getting just £1.8billion investment but contrast this with the Tory heartland of 'London & the South East' which is getting £3billion investment."

Mr Cameron has also been accused of ducking away from making change in the town - instead offering words to give residents false hope.

"They are giving enough funding to replace the Allerdene Bridge over the A1 so that it remains toll-free," added Mr O'Neill.

"But they are still telling Warrington residents we will have to pay a toll to cross the River Mersey.

"Someone needs to ask Mr Cameron directly: 'Why is WBC getting massive cuts to its budget and having to reduce many vital public services, when councils in his Tory heartlands are hardly being affected?'

"We don't need words Mr Cameron, we need action!"

Labour's parliamentary candidate for Warrington South, Nick Bent, has also joined in the war of words against Mr Cameron - and insists the Prime Minister must not be re-elected into his post.

"This Tory Prime Minister has again insulted our intelligence with vague platitudes about infrastructure and no commitment to scrap road tolls on the Mersey bridges for Warrington drivers," he said.

"And not even an apology for the crisis at our hospital's A&E - Cameron has to go."
