ONE year on from what is thought to be the town's largest music-wellbeing charity being formed, its founders have said they have been delighted watching it grow from strength to strength.

Bewsey resident Rod Scotney and Heather Bamforth originally launched Helping Minds to add to health and wellbeing services in Warrington but it soon evolved into a much more musical cause.

From a small group of three attendees, the charity has now around 50 members enjoying a range of music activities including an over 50s music group run from Lifetime on Sankey Street and an open-age music group run from the Gallery Cafe.

Rod, aged 54, added: "The charity started following a campaign and website to improve local mental health and wellbeing services but quickly evolved into a music charity where music is enjoyed and played by our town’s people.

“But the charity doesn't just run music sessions, we also place willing members into bands.

"The 35 piece Café Band, the eight piece Acoustic Boost Collection and The Hotwheels Ukulele Club are three of our current bands."

Rod, a qualified business manager and marketeer, has been involved in music from being a small child and has worked professionally in the industry for more than 15 years.

He joined forces for the cause with experienced musician Heather, a healthcare scientist working for the NHS and clinical educator for Manchester University, who adds she has observed 'first-hand the power music plays in healing and filling people’s lives with joy'.

The pair are now looking ahead to an exciting 2015.

Rod added: “We have a packed programme for this coming year.

"From our partner venues Lifetime and The Gallery Cafe we’ll be providing a traditional ladies Morris Dancing activity called the Golden Gates Morris and from the Gallery Café on Saturdays we’re starting a younger person’s acoustic-music session and open mic morning.

"We're also keen to continue our work as music-educators by offering ukulele, guitar and percussion workshops for learners and improvers."
