DANCERS dazzled on the ballroom floor at the weekend during the second successful Strictly St Rocco's.

The glamorous fundraiser saw 10 amateurs take to the floor at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa with their professional partners in aid of the Warrington hospice.

And this year's champion has said he was delighted to make the grade.

Penketh High School head teacher Ben Dunne scooped five 10s from the judges, which included Warrington Wolves player Ben Westwood, former contestant and Hollyoaks star Ashley Taylor Dawson and last year's winner Vicki Stockman, before topping the 400-strong audience's vote with his American smooth quickstep routine.

The 47-year-old said: "I volunteered our media team to produce the videos for the night but when they asked me to take part I said no because I can't dance to save my life.

"But my wife said I should do it because I might find some rhythm and that was it.

"I told Bennie Westwood just before he gave us the scores that his daughter's report was on my desk but I couldn't believe it when everyone gave us 10s.

"We performed for the pupils the week before which I think helped us and I have been telling my year 11 maths class that nothing should stop them from hitting their targets as if I can do this anything is possible."

Cadmans Dance Centre supported the event by providing professional dancers and choreography on the night and Mr Dunne added his partner Emma Wilding was fantastic.

He said: "In September I was told I had to pull my finger out but Emma was great and very patient with me.

"We got stronger each time we practised but I never thought we would be in contention to win it.

"The pupils alone have raised about £1,400 for St Rocco's this year and we're hoping to hold a non-uniform day for them at the end of the year.

"I would say to anyone thinking about doing it next year; get involved, be brave and enjoy it on the day which is what we did."

The sequin and sparkle-filled event has so far raised more than £32,000 for the cause.

Hospice matron Alison White added: “Strictly St. Rocco’s was a fantastic night.

"It summed up everything about St Rocco’s that is so special- it captured the hearts and minds of the community.

"We would like to thank everyone who attended and the ten dance couples who were so brave and committed to St. Rocco’s Hospice.

"All in all - a real night to remember."
