CREATIVE work from schoolchildren from across the town was unveiled in Golden Square in remembrance of victims of the 1993 IRA bombing in Warrington.

The display features 20 pieces of colourful artwork along with the words 'Our Past, Our Present, Our Future', and stands on the wall next to Monsoon.

A total of 20 primary schools took part and created the fine masterpieces based on the themes of love, peace, hope and reconciliation.

Artists Andy and Sharon Shaw worked with the schoolchildren to create the pieces, using watercolour paints, coloured pencils and oil pastels - an experience the children enjoyed.

Sisters Anya Knowles, aged 9, and Caitlin, aged 8, who are in the same class at Penketh South Primary School, worked on the same piece.

"It was a really nice thing to do and I hope we do more things like this in the future," said Anya.

Caitlin added: "I like working together with my sister and liked making the art work. Our picture has two friends in a boat on the river which represents friendship.”

"We helped the children along the way but they came up with some of their own ideas which was really good to see," said Andy.

Cllr Mike Hannon (LAB - Orford) was present to see the art work on show and believes the work of the youngsters can unite the town.

"It fills me with great pride to see so many schoolchildren using their creative flair in a project that has so much meaning for our town," he said.

“What happened in March 1993 will always be a part of our history and it is important to me that future generations understand not only what happened but also learn about how Warrington came together as a town and moved forward during a very difficult and emotional time.

“During that time school children helped create the River of Life memorial and it is important to me that 21 years later children who walk past the memorial know what it represents and are able to play their own part in the town’s history.

“I am so pleased that what was an idea has grown into this wonderful art project and exhibition and that schools and everyone involved has helped us to do this."

Future commemorative events are in the pipeline but funding is required.
