CHRISTMAS was given a Victorian twist as hundreds of people came to Culcheth to celebrate an annual tradition.

Residents, shopkeepers, parish councillors and Lions club members dressed to impress in 19th century attire while visitors enjoyed mulled wine and roasted chestnuts.

There were carol concerts in the Forget-Me-Not toy and book shop and Culcheth Methodist Church as well as fairground attractions in Lodge Drive and Jackson Avenue.

Meanwhile, the art exhibition at the Culcheth Centre was considered one of the best in years.

The poignant display marked the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and the Thursday morning art group members, who are mostly in their 70s, created art work and collages and exhibited artefacts.

Budding artists and authors were also encouraged through art and creative writing competitions.

Winners from Newchurch Primary School and Culcheth Primary School had the chance to show off their creations to Helen Jones MP who came to meet them in the library.

Big crowds were then drawn to the Village Green where Cllr Matt Smith called on Father Christmas to help him switch on the village’s Christmas lights.

There was a hearty rendition of Jingle Bells before the day ended with a firework display on the Common.

Cllr Smith said: “This year’s Victorian Day was one of the best yet, and a big thank you must go to everyone involved, whether they helped with the preparations beforehand or ran any of the activities that took place on the day."
