FEWER midwives are now working at Warrington Hospital than four years ago, according to figures obtained by Warrington North MP Helen Jones.
Statistics found there were 105 full time equivalent midwives in 2010 but the figure is now 102.
Ms Jones added: “The number of midwives employed here has fallen each year under this government.
"In 2011 there were 100, in 2012 there were 98 and in 2013 there were 94. Even this year we have not reached the level of 2010.
“This puts additional stress on the midwives we do have and makes their job of giving the best care to mothers and babies more difficult.
“This government has even denied them the one per cent pay rise they were awarded by an independent body, leading midwives to strike for the first time in their history.
“ At the moment the government is neglecting the needs of Warrington mothers and babies. “
