A MAN who kicked a 'good Samaritan' in the head while he lay on the floor after he attempted to intervene in an argument in Warrington town centre has been jailed for four years.
Warrington Crown Court heard on Thursday how Ryan Ormandy, aged 27, of Stage Lane, Lymm, attacked the man on Bridge Street in the early hours of New Year's Day.
Owen Edwards said Ormandy was 'hurling insults' at his own girlfriend when the victim challenged the defendant for 'bullying' her.
Witnesses including a taxi marshall said they saw Ormandy headbutt the man twice, knocking him to the floor, before kicking him in the head.
Mr Edwards said passers-by were 'disgusted' by the attack which 'could have killed' the victim.
He was taken to hospital to be treated for a fractured cheekbone and heavy bleeding to an eye.
The court heard Ormandy had received word a close relative had suddenly died and was 'devastated', arguing about the best way to get home with his girlfriend.
Recorder S J Killeen sentenced Ormandy to three-and-a-half years in prison, after he pleaded guilty to GBH with intent, and six months in prison, for blackmail, to run consecutively, a total of four years.
