Traffic headache from Monday for Sankey Way motorists

First published in News

MOTORISTS heading for the town centre will face a traffic headache on Monday as improvement works begin on Sankey Way, Cromwell Avenue and the Sankey Green roundabout junctions.

The A57 Sankey Way / A574 Cromwell Avenue scheme involves Cromwell Avenue being widened at the junction to improve pedestrian/cycle facilities, the removal of the bus lane on Cromwell Avenue to improve traffic flow, creating a 4m path on Cromwell Avenue for pedestrians and cyclists and the widening of Peace Drive to provide a separate right and left turn lanes with work taking place over night between 8pm and 7am.

Temporary road closures will be in operation during these hours and a diversion route will be signed.

The A57 Sankey Green Roundabout scheme involves four lanes being created on the A57 Liverpool Road approach to the roundabout and traffic lights being replaced.

Work will be limited to 9.30am to 3.30pm apart from carriageway resurfacing which will be carried out in the evening/overnight in conjunction with the Cromwell Avenue works.

Resurfacing works on Thewlis Street will be carried out on Sundays to minimise disruption to bus users and special buses will be in operation to continue to serve the stops along Old Liverpool Road.

Good to see they are restricting the work hours and are doing it now all the schools have broken up so hopefully it wont all impact too much on the rush hour traffic. The pink eye sankey islands not to bad as it is though on the approach from town along liverpool road. Infact it's usually a breeze after struggling to get through Bridge Foot first.

I do hope they put in more of those helpful lanes that end immediately after a set of lights so anyone choosing that lane has to force their way back into a single lane. I find these most helpful and not at all irritating.

The next week should be entertaining, it took me almost an hour to travel along Lovely Lane to the Pink Eye island yesterday afternoon, and that's before any roadworks start.
It seems that the towns traffic network had one of its Friday nervous breakdowns brought on by...not very much.
As usual, the authorities were notable by their absence.
