Warrington charity worker hails resilient Filipino people

Warrington Guardian: The immediate aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan The immediate aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan

A TOWN centre based charity worker has described how resilient Filipino people have been in the wake of the devestating typhoon which hit three months ago.

Linda Tiongco, north west Christian Aid manager based at Bold Street Methodist Church, has recently returned from the Philippines. Linda flew out days after typhoon Haiyan hit the country to help co-ordinate the response to the disaster through the ACT Alliance.

“When I first arrived the level of total destruction was overwhelming but the recovery has been at a speed unexpected by many overseas workers,” said Linda.

"The Filipino people are amazingly resilient. They didn’t wait for help to arrive but helped each other as best they could. Strong local participation and the cultural tradition of ‘bayanihan’ or community self-help has meant that the recovery is gaining momentum.”

So did Linda fly down to Somerset to provide aid for our own people? me think's not! And to be honest, our people down south have also been very resilient due to the fact no one is interested in their plight! Hope you had a nice holiday Linda at the cost of your charity. WHAT ABOUT OUR OWN PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
! Don't see anyone flying over here to help do you.
Still Well Grumpy

You ask "did Linda fly down to Somerset to provide aid for our own people?"

Did you?

As I have said previously, those who give money to support our fellow human beings abroad are more likely to also support causes in the UK as well.

Those with your attitude tend to do neither.

Nick you are grating on me which you may enjoy. I contribute to charities on a regular basis, it is fine to swan off to Syria, Philipines, Afganistan and the likes but what about the people of our great nation? So we just ignore the people down south who are flooded with no electric or gas! Do we forget they have no home to live in! Typhoon/flood same result! Food banks for the poor and needy in Warrington, yes Warrington, who may not eat tonight!! Come on Nick at least give me something to work with other than Linda has been to Somerset and put in some sand bags!

You criticise someone for going abroad rather than going to somewhere in the UK - but you wouldn't even go to physically help in the UK

Send the WG a postcard from Somerset when you're there, won't you?.

It's shameful how the usual suspects are using this situation to challenge the generosity of spirit of the British public.
