A TOWN centre based charity worker has described how resilient Filipino people have been in the wake of the devestating typhoon which hit three months ago.

Linda Tiongco, north west Christian Aid manager based at Bold Street Methodist Church, has recently returned from the Philippines. Linda flew out days after typhoon Haiyan hit the country to help co-ordinate the response to the disaster through the ACT Alliance.

“When I first arrived the level of total destruction was overwhelming but the recovery has been at a speed unexpected by many overseas workers,” said Linda.

"The Filipino people are amazingly resilient. They didn’t wait for help to arrive but helped each other as best they could. Strong local participation and the cultural tradition of ‘bayanihan’ or community self-help has meant that the recovery is gaining momentum.”
