Sankey mother and daughter going the extra mile at London Marathon
Updated 3:05pm Friday 31st January 2014 in News
A MOTHER-of-two is quite literally going the extra mile with her daughter in order to raise funds for Children with Cancer UK.
Sue McHugh, aged 41, from Great Sankey, will run beyond the finish line of this year’s London Marathon on Sunday, April 13 – the same day her six-year-old daughter, Holly, completes her 26.2 mile adventure.
Holly, a pupil at Chapelford Primary School, will be running one-mile at a time to raise money for the same charity as her mother.
Sue has completed two London marathons in the past for the charity and this year hopes to raise more than £2,000 with the help of her daughter and son Eddie, aged nine, who will be completing cycling challenges.
Sue said: “I am so proud of Holly and her determination to run the full distance. It is really great to see her and her friends being aware of and so keen to help the children behind this charity.
“It is very emotional for us all, to achieve this goal would be fantastic and we are going to try our best to raise as much as we can.
“I know I will be in tears running the final mile with her in London. She is already talking about reaching that finish line which is really wonderful to hear.”
After completing the first leg of her journey earlier this month, Holly is now looking forward to completing the rest of her journey, part of which, will see Olympic champion Chris Boardman join in.
The former racing cyclist, who won gold at Barcelona 1992, will join the determined youngster for a one mile stretch of her journey around Media City in Salford next month.
It is hoped that the section with the former champion will then be televised on the BBC on the day of the main event.
Holly’s journey will conclude in mid-April when her mother will run beyond the finish line near Buckingham Palace to accompany her daughter through the final mile of her own marathon.
