Tea dance stars from Warrington impress boyband Five
12:00pm Thursday 19th December 2013 in News
WALKING into a tea dance at the Parr Hall, the boys from Five did not know what was about to hit them.
Wearing woolly hats, jeans and trainers, the chart toppers were stunned after being told by Age UK volunteer Pam Rowland they would have to change before meeting her guests.
The boyband were in town earlier this year filming for ITV programme Text Santa as they bid for Christmas number one with their fellow Big Reunion band members.
But Pam, who runs the tea dances on Monday afternoons, said the pop stars saw the funny side once they had changed into tuxedos.
She added: “The producers were looking for an Age UK tea dance as it’s one of the charities the Text Santa campaign supports and said afterwards they were so pleased they had picked us.
“I didn’t know who Five were but speaking to any of the youngsters in our charity shop and they would swoon just at the name.”
A sneak peak of Five’s time in the town appeared on ITV2 programme The Big Reunion Christmas last week and now Pam, who was recently awarded national volunteer of the year, is now looking forward to seeing more.
Pam, who cannot dance any more after 20 operations on her foot and has been president of the St Helens, Halton and Warrington branch of Age UK for the last three years, added: “My job was to welcome the boys before they met our 80 guests and they came bouncing in and one of them gave me a peck on the cheek.
“I told them I couldn’t have them meeting my guests the way they looked but they were really nice lads.
“They looked fabulous once they were changed and joined in with everything.
“It was a wonderful afternoon and we have had so many enquires since it’s been on TV.
“I enjoyed seeing their faces when they met me and my husband Allan said everyone from ITV were doubled up laughing with the way I handled them but I was just being natural.”
Tea dances take place on Monday afternoons at the Pyramid.
See them in action on Text Santa on Friday at 8pm on ITV.
