WOOLSTON Primary School has been official opened as children welcomed visitors to explore the new £4m school.

Bosses from Warrington Borough Council joined the Mayor Clr Peter Carey to open the school on Friday.

It features a distinctive saw-tooth roof design with all pupils based in one building.

There is also a hard play area, multi-use games area and under 12s grass pitch.

School leaders said it will provide a ‘better education’ for children.

Clr Carey unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion.

Warrington’s Signing Choir and Woolston Primary’s year five pupils performed for guests who then took a tour of the new site.

The ceremony concluded with a song by the whole school.

Head teacher Nick Toyne said: “Today is a very important and proud day in the continued life of our school.

“This new building and the staff within it will inspire learners both now and in the future to achieve their best and be successful citizens.”

However, capacity is down as a result of the re-build.

There is now room for 210 pupils, down from 256 at the old site, meaning a smaller intake in September.

The opening comes after Ofsted gave Woolston Primary a positive report, following the failed inspection in 2012.

It was earmarked as a priority for investment by Warrington Borough Council last year, as the condition of the old building was graded as the ‘worst’ in the town.

Pupils have been using the new facility since September, despite concerns the project may finish behind schedule.
