TWO sets of young carers have been shortlisted in the Young Carer of the Year category.

Nicole Heimes, aged 12, is a young carer who supports her mum who has a mental health condition.

From Padgate, she is an inspiration because she supports and cares for her mum on a day to day basis to cope with the challenges, barriers and difficulties mums mental health condition can throw at her.

Bradley Siddall, aged 13, and sister Kelsey, aged 10, have been nominated because of their strength working as a team.

Bradley and Kelsey care for their mother who suffers from various health conditions including lupus, kidney disease and mobility issues. Both children take on caring roles that would usually be associated with that of an adult.

Simon Barber, chief executive of 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Nearly a quarter of a million young people in England and Wales care for a relative who may be mentally or physically unwell; disabled or have problems with drugs, alcohol or both.

“According to the Office of National Statistics, about 23,000 of these are nine years old or younger.

“Young people are very often happy to help, and there are lots of positives that can come out of the experience.

“But it can also be very physically and mentally tiring, and involve lots of personal sacrifices on their part.

“We believe these truly remarkable young people deserve more support and recognition.

“That’s why we are proud to sponsor the ‘Young Carer’ category.

“Best of luck to all the nominees from everyone at our Trust!”
