WINNERS of our design a birthday card competition wowed Cbeebies favourite Curtis Jobling with their arty skills during a masterclass.

The lucky youngsters spent an hour with the Bob the Builder designer after creating cards to mark the Warrington Guardian’s 160th birthday this year.

We asked for designs to include something related to the town and talented doodlers did us proud painting, drawing and crayoning Orford skate park, the Alice in Wonderland statue and Warrington Wolves.

The Wereworld author said he was very impressed with the primary school youngsters’ entries and it proves Warrington has talent.

He added: “It’s been lovely to come in and do a school talk in the summer holidays and what better way for the kids to break up the fun of the holidays with some creative chat, cartooning, illustrating and story writing.

“It’s been great to see some talented youngsters and shows there are some good artists coming through in Warrington.”

The group, including St Vincent’s pupil Liam Dooley, aged seven, Bewsey Lodge pupil Finley Cumberbirch, aged six, St Thomas pupil Joseph Roxby, aged six and St Barnabas pupil Ellie Houghton, aged six, visited the Warrington Guardian offices on Friday after topping the poll in a phone vote earlier this year.

Curtis showed the class how to draw Bob and Raa Raa the Noisy Lion with a step-by-step guide as well as revealing Bob originally started out with a moustache and bald head while his friend Spud in the show is a Warrington Wolves fan.

The youngsters said they loved the session and were looking forward to showing off their new skills when they return to school in September.

2013 is packed with events as the Warrington Guardian marks 160 years.

An exhibition celebrating the paper’s history opens at Warrington Museum in September while nominations are now open for our community awards in October.
