TEMPERATURES reached such a degree in the town last week that gritters had to be called out to stop roads from melting.
Emergency action was taken on Phipps Lane, Burtonwood by the council after the problem was spotted on Friday morning.
A spokesman said: “Due to extremely high temperatures throughout Warrington and the UK, roads are starting to show signs of melting.
“A recent surface dressing scheme undertaken at Phipps Lane in Burtonwood was recently inspected and emergency action was required to prevent further melting of the road.
“The contractor for the works was requested to attend site and to apply grit to the road surface.
“This was undertaken over some considerable distance using a road gritter in the usual manner to cover large quantities.
“Timely intervention is extremely important to protect roads in such high temperatures, and we are very pleased that the contractor was able to mobilise with appropriate equipment at short notice.”
