THERE was a big surprise for Penketh High School pupils during their year 11 leavers assembly...gangnam style.

The students were stunned as a shot-by-shot recreation of the Youtube hit video was played for them starring their head teacher Jeff Hughes.

The retiring head, who leaves the Heath Road school in the summer, promised pupils he would perform South Korean Psy’s multi million-selling track if targets were hit this year.

And after Penketh High moved among the top 10 per cent of improving schools in the country, Mr Hughes was good to his word.

He added: “This has been a fantastic year for the school.

“Thanks to the hard work of the staff and students, we are now amongst the top 10 per cent of improving schools in the country and this will be our best ever year in terms of exam results.

“I promised the students that if they hit all of their targets I would dance Gangnam Style and here we are!”

More than 50 teachers gave up their own time before and after school to create the professional-looking film over four weeks while staff also had the help of Mercedes Warrington who loaned them an SLK 250 for free to keep the video uncannily close to the original.

It was premiered on Friday as a climax to the year 11 leavers assembly for 250 pupils.

Jonathon Kay, the school’s media development leader, said “Penketh is a national leader in media and visual arts.

“We have produced feature films that have been released in Odeon cinemas but I never thought we would be producing this!

“It’s been made possible due to the dedication of Mr Hughes, all of the other amazing staff here and local businesses have been fantastic in supporting our plight.

“I think we have made something very special for the pupils.”
