A LABOUR councillor who voted against his own party’s budget has been speaking about his decision at a trade union conference.

Clr Kevin Bennett (LAB - Fairfield and Howley) who is a memeber of the Unite union told the north west TUC conference in Manchester: “I decided to vote against the cuts. And look I’m still alive to tell the tale.”

An emergency motion was put to the conference in support of Clr Bennett’s stand against the cuts and received a majority vote in favour.

Actor Ricky Tomlinson also met with Clr Bennett at the event after being introduced by TUC Boss Alec McFadden.
