THE April meeting opened with the singing of Jerusalem. The president, Pat Sharp, had to report the sad news that Pat Holbrook, a long standing member had died a few days previously. Reference was then made to various activities which had taken place in March, including a very enjoyable afternoon tea at The Mere Court Hotel. Bunting for the WI centenary was explained, with every member being asked to produce one piece of work.

Forthcoming activities include, theatre visits to Manchester, Chester and to River Dance in September. A French evening will take place at the end of April, and the May outing is to Kendal. A Group trip to Buckingham Palace is in the pipeline. A very busy year ahead!

The meeting then handed over to the Members’ Night Committee with Sue Roberts as president, Joyce Astill, secretary, Ann Brock, Virginia Butterworth, Pat Masters, Kathleen Pennycuick, June Smither, Chris Spittle, Anne Stubbs and Rita Sutton. The minutes for 2013 were read and signed. Sue thanked Pat and her committee for their imaginative and efficient work during the year.

The speaker, Mr. Peter Ashburner, an antiques auctioneer and partner with Frank Marshall of Knutsford, was introduced. He opened his talk by declaring himself a Barbie specialist (highest price recorded £9,000) who also took part in programmes such as Cash in the Attic and Flog It!

He produced a variety of items beginning with a French Roman-style short sword, followed by a collection of medals. Chinese and Asian goods are in big demand by the Chinese. Rare and interesting objects are often found in unlikely places. Two porcelain gravy boats dated 1745, from the top shelf of an old person’s bungalow brought £41,000! Finally, Mr. Ashburner produced a diary of the last Hangman, Harry Allan, which sold at £4,500.

Chris Spittle thanked the speaker for his most interesting talk and members made a note to clear their attics very soon!

All visitors and new members are welcome when we meet at 7.30pm in Whitley Village Hall on the first Thursday of the month. Our website is www.whitleywi.org
