A University Challenge contestant has been hailed as “the new Monkman” after he won fans with his impressive performance on the quiz show.
Oxford student Johnny Gibson was compared to Cambridge graduate Eric Monkman, who became an internet sensation because of his booming voice on the TV quiz.
Viewers enjoyed Gibson’s fast talking and frequent lip-licking during the broadcast, with one fan writing on Twitter: “GIBSON IS THE NEW MONKMAN IM CALLING IT.”
Another wrote: “GIBSON IS MY FAVOURITE.”
Others marvelled at his energy levels, with one writing: “When you take 4 pro plus and drink several Red Bull’s waiting to go on TV,” as another wrote: “Looks like Magdalen Gibson has smashed a 6 pack of red bull before the show.”
However, some fans were adamant nobody would replace Monkman in their affections, as one admirer tweeted: “Gibson, there’s only one , that’s the #Monkman.”
Monkman’s appearance on the quiz was such a sensation he will host his own Radio 4 show with fellow contestant Bobby Seagull.
