Mary Berry has revealed even she has suffered some culinary failures.
Despite her wealth of experience, the Great British Bake Off judge and TV chef admitted she has accidentally used the wrong ingredients in dishes.
“I’ve made so many mistakes. I’ve done salt instead of sugar,” she recalled.
“It’s very well to tell people when you’ve done too many chillis and you add a bit of potato to it or you sieve it down, (but) it’s never the same is it?”
Mary, best known for her cake baking and fronts BBC Two TV show Mary Berry’s Absolute Favourites, has even experienced the trauma of cakes sinking.
“I’ve had failures, but that’s good because we can commiserate. I’ve had them (cakes) going down in the middle, all sorts of things happen,” she added.
The 80-year-old cook said BBC boss Alan Yentob initially expressed doubts over a show focusing on cakes.
“Things have changed from when I used to do it. When I did my first television, Celebration Cakes, the BBC’s Alan Yentob said: ‘Nobody likes cakes’,” Mary remembered.
“Well that was OK. We did it, but I did everything, all the props, all the ones at different stages. But now, I get so much support and help and care and advice, television’s changed.”
Mary Berry’s Absolute Favourites continues on BBC Two on Fridays, while the book accompanying the series is out now in hardback.
