MERYL Streep’s portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady is both accurate and persuasive.

In flashbacks we see her character tussle with trades unions, the Falklands War, the murder by the IRA of her mentor, Airey Neave in the 1984 Brighton Conference bomb and, above all, her efforts to overcome male and class prejudice.

Thatcher faces up to these unflinchingly, a formidable woman, always more patriot than politician.

Her courage is constantly underlined in this moving film.

It opens with her as an elderly dementia sufferer buying milk – a far cry from the ‘milk snatcher’ days. The film dwells too long on the frail, old lady rather than the young, strong leader leaving no time to disclose groundbreaking policies such as the Right to Buy.

Meryl Streep portrays a woman of mettle yet also of flesh and blood.
