THE Avengers keep saving the day and Batman v Superman is set to clobber the box office next year.

Superhero movies continue to dominate the cinemas but it is arguably on the small screen where some of the most interesting interpretations of comic book characters are coming from.

Take Daredevil. Marvel's series for Netflix was set in the same universe as The Avengers.

Without being weighed down by the expectation of attracting millions of viewers, Daredevil ditched the Spandex and cheesy quips for something dark, gritty and intense.

Rather than a typical story of good versus bad, the show about a blind attorney turned vigilante in Hell's Kitchen, features a world where the 'hero' is fighting his own inner demons and the villain is conflicted.

It featured a strong story arc where the impact of their struggle on ordinary people was explored and it absolutely pulled no punches with its violent and yet incredibly choreographed fight scenes.

Now Marvel is hoping to replicate the success of Daredevil all over again with Jessica Jones, the second of four planned Netflix-based series

Revisiting Marvel's universe once more, the show features another twist on the superhero genre with Breaking Bad's Krysten Ritter as a world weary crime fighter-turned-private investigator.

Also starring David Tennant, the series will see Jessica attempting to escape her past and conceal her powers and has been described as more of a psychological thriller than a superhero show.

- Jessica Jones is on Netflix on November 20.
