WEST Side Story arrived on stage in 1957 and marked a significant departure from the classical formula of musicals, setting a new precedent for theatre.

But despite the refreshing take to the production, this West Side Story failed to ignite any excitement like its musical friends.

Unlike classics such as Singin’ in the Rain and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, West Side Story lacked the razzmatazz expected from this genre of musical.

Telling the story of two lovers from rival street gangs, WestSide Story crams a hectic storyline into the performance, which admittedly hooks the audience from start to finish, but left me feeling disenchanted and unsatisfied.

Katie Hall stole the show when the tour of West Side Story hit the stage at the Palace Theatre.

Taking on the role of Maria, Hall’s voice was angelic but unfortunately drowned out other leading characters.

The choreography was innovative and imaginative and the cast exuded confidence but sadly something was missing for me to place it up there with the greats currently touring the country.
