CRANKY Woody Grant thinks he has won $1million and nothing is going to change his mind.

The old man has in fact been duped by a sweepstakes marketing scheme but he is going to collect his prize in Nebraska if it kills him.

Booze-addled and frail but determined in spirit, Woody defies his family and sense as he sets off on foot from Montana on the 849-mile journey.

So his estranged son David (Will Forte) reluctantly agrees to take him to Nebraska to keep him safe, protect his dignity and to get him to shut up.

It is Academy Award, Golden Globe and Oscar-winning director Alexander Payne’s second road trip movie since Sideways.

But this time it is a much more personal story and although it is shot in black and white it is full of warmth and dry humour.

Bruce Dern is outstanding as Woody, a man trying – and failing – to make amends for an unfulfilled life in his twilight years.

His character grew up in Nebraska and the trip sees him confront some ghosts from his past.

The ugly side of small town America comes out too when old acquaintances discover Woody is a ‘millionaire’.

June Squibb is also excellent as Woody’s long-suffering and fiery wife, Kate.

But really this is about a father and son reconnecting and the unbreakable bond that families share whatever comes between them.
