TODAY marks 20 years to the day since Helen Jones became Warrington North MP in a parliamentary term which has seen her survive five general elections.

During her time serving constituents, the 62-year-old has endured time on the Opposition's front bench, including as shadow Home Office minister after getting the nod from former Labour leader Ed Miliband in 2013.

The 62-year-old, who currently chairs the House of Commons petitions committee, has highlighted some of her most memorable moments during her lengthy term.

She said: "Being in a position to have helped thousands of people with individual problems.

"Getting the last Labour government to buy the Daresbury Wing for Warrington Hospital and to provide a new A&E.

"Being one of the 101 Labour women MPs elected in 1997 – it changed people's idea of what an MP looked like.

"Getting funding for the Jubilee Hub in Orford.

"Persuading the Government to give us more money for 16-18 year olds with special needs.

"Warrington got three quarters of a million pounds extra for some of our most profoundly disabled young people.

"Staying up all night to vote through a statutory minimum wage at last.

"The number of people who contacted me to check I was safe after the recent terrorist incident, showing how decent people in this constituency are."

She also included some of her low points throughout her term, including a mishap from The Sun.

"People were ringing up thinking I was George Galloway because The Sun newspaper had printed the wrong telephone number," she added.

"Also, watching the Tories and Liberal Democrats put through a local government finance bill that's taken £100 million worth of funding away from Warrington.

"Seeing the proposed changes to school funding, which would mean all Warrington North schools will lose money.

"I'm the daughter of two factory workers who got where I am because of a good education and I want other children to have the same chance."

Mrs Jones said she has been thrilled to meet 'lots of really nice people' in the constituency since 1997.

And the politician is confident of adding to her 1997, 2001, 2005, 2010 and 2015 general election glory when polling stations open on June 8 as she looks to defend her 8,923 majority.

She added: "I've been very grateful for the support I've had over the years.

"I've always stuck up for the people of Warrington North and I've taken on vested interests in Westminster and in Warrington on their behalf.

"I hope people will put their trust in me again to keep on doing just that."
