Bennett rolls back the years

Pilkingtons 22

Bank Quay Bulls 32

BANK Quay Bulls geared up for the first round of the Powergen Challenge Cup by breaking Pilkingtons' two-year unbeaten home record.

Bulls, who travel to Halifax for their tricky cup tie with National Conference League Two outfit Ovenden on Saturday, kick-off 1.30pm, surged into an early lead in their North West Counties Amateur Rugby League Premier Division clash with Pilkingtons.

Craig Millington and Phil Braddish set up tries for Paul Cragg, with the impressive Ryan Fieldhouse adding the conversions, but the home side hit back with three tries and a conversion.

Bulls regained the lead as Billy Rowan took Cragg's pass and touched down a converted try that left the visitors 18-14 ahead.

Pilkingtons levelled the scores minutes into the second period and Bulls were forced to drop out three times before the introduction of player-coach Andy Bennett, the former Wolves star, changed the game.

His pass put Braddish over for an unconverted try and, although the hosts again replied, hooker Wes Lawton ran from dummy half to score and Braddish crossed for his second of the game.

* Places are available on the supporters' coach that departs for Ovenden from Bank Quay Sports Club on Saturday at 10.45am. Anyone wanting to book a place can contact Neil Baxter on 07957 705237.
