Mum's the word for

hurricane relief

NEW ORLEANS may seem a world away but a helping hand is being extended thousands of miles to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Despite living on the other side of the globe, Louise Williams of Broad Lane, Grappenhall, has been busy organising toiletries and a clothing convoy for people affected by the devastation of the hurricane.

As well as collecting children's and adults' clothes from friends, Mrs Williams has contacted leading supermarkets to enlist their help, hoping high profile sponsorship will enable the campaign to help victims in the USA.

"The charities I have spoken to are in desperate need of children's stuff.

"My husband and I have a two-year-old and one-year-old and the thought that they could have been starving or without clothes for five days is unthinkable."

The town's branches of St Vincent de Paul and Knights of St Colombo and St Wilfrid's Primary School have already pledged cash donations.

Now the resourceful Grappenhall mum is in urgent need of a storage venue and sponsorship to ship the items.
