Longest-serving JPs retire after 55 years

TRIBUTES were paid to two popular Warrington magistrates this month, who have retired after a combined 55 years on the bench.

Alan Seddon has stepped down after 23 years while Frank Haslam, Warrington's longest-serving magistrate, has retired following a distinguished 32-year career.

Representatives from the Crown Prosecution Service and the Probation Service, along with solicitors and court staff, attended the two occasions to wish both men the best in their retirement.

Maggie Skilling, of the Probation Service, said of Mr Seddon, who retired on June 1: "There was not one member of staff that didn't know you."

She said that he was well known for being a good listener and for making fair judgements.

Mrs Skilling added: "It's nice to be here to wish you all the best in your retirement on behalf of the Probation Service and wish you a long and very happy retirement."

Mr Seddon said that he would miss being on the bench.

He added: "In this job you meet a lot of wonderful people, many of whom I have made friends with, and all of whom I shall remember for many years to come.

"All the clerks are invaluable. They do a wonderful job, as do all the court staff. Where would we be without them?"

And this Tuesday, this week, on his last day, Mr Haslam addressed another court full of friends and colleagues to say thanks.

He said: "I am very proud to have served such a long time. I cannot help thinking how lucky I have been. I have really enjoyed my time."

The men, both aged 70, were presented with long-serving certificates and chose to accept bouquets for their wives, rather than gifts for themselves.
