Tougher stance on mast is welcomed

A SANDBACH councillor has welcomed stricter planning guidance for the erection of mobile phone masts.

Draft guidelines for the new masts have been published by Congleton Borough Council, and members are also keen to hear peoples' views on the issue.

The new strategy aims to minimise the visual impact of the phone masts, which have sparked angry opposition from the borough's residents in the past.

The new rules would mean that the council would give preference to new antennas that use existing masts and buildings before considering a new mast.

And operators will be encouraged to share sites.

A council spokesman said: "The design of associated fencing and equipment cabins should be sympathetic to the proposed site, and use material and colours that have minimal visual impact."

With regard to health implications the council will require all operators to meet government guidelines in respect of all proposed installations.

Sandbach councillor Jack Iddon, whose portfolio covers economic planning, said: "I very much welcome this draft guidance note.

"It will help to achieve the optimum siting of telecommunication installations in the borough by seeking to ensure their minimum visual impact especially in sensitive areas."

The guidelines can be inspected at all council Information Centres, the borough's libraries and on the council's website at www.congleton.gov.uk

Comments should be sent to Richard House, the borough's regeneration and economic policy manager by February 6.
